Key Laptop Terms
Owning a laptop has become a necessity to many people, especially since the hit of the Covid-19 pandemic. At hardware village, we have helped many with purchasing various laptops, and we can tell that many people are still trying to adjust to the life of working from home.
However, what holds our interest is how many people do not even understand the functions o some of the basic features of a laptop. Once they can use their laptop to type and send emails, they are good. So, when their laptop develops a fault, it leaves them confused, and they do not know how to describe the issue to the technical.
We often find it laughable, but we have also seen that it is a cause for concern as some people spend more than they should because they do not know some laptop-related terms.
Last week, Dee had issues with her laptop as it wasn’t coming up again. She was frantic as she explained that the laptop never fell and nothing had happened to it. So, she was confused about what was happening.
Upon further inspection, the electrician noticed that the laptop had a faulty screen and motherboard. Unfortunately, Dee did not even understand what a motherboard means in a laptop. Understandably, not everyone would be technologically savvy, but it is only right to know the basics of a gadget that you use regularly.
So, we would be highlighting some terms that you should be familiar with as a laptop user, and we would also drop its definition. The goal is to ensure that you are not lost the next time people are talking about laptops. Also, we wish to ensure that you can effectively communicate with a technician the next time you take your laptop for repairs.
Some of these laptop terms are:
If your laptop does not come with a keyboard, you cannot carry out any activity. Typically, you will hear people refer to a keyboard as an input device. After all, it is what lets you type documents, emails, and much more. Life would be unimaginable to use a laptop without a keyboard.
Keyboards usually come in two designs, but the most popular is the QWERTY keyboard. You can identify the QWERTY keyboard as these are the first 6 letters from the left corner.
You can also get different variations of a keyboard like those that come with light and much more. It depends on your preference.
The mouse is another input device that goes with a laptop. It is what lets you navigate from one end to another as you work with your laptop. Typically, you can choose to use your laptop mouse, or you can get an external mouse.
Some people say that they prefer using an external mouse as the constant use of an in-built mouse will make it spoil quickly. So, if you would prefer using an external mouse, it comes in two types. Therefore, there is a wired and wireless mouse. They are, as the name implies. So, you can also choose your preference.
When working on your laptop, we are sure that you sometimes hear a noise that sounds like a fan. Typically, this noise comes when you have been using the laptop for a long time. Now, allow us to liken it to the life of a human.
Understandably, when a person has undergone a stressful activity, they get tired and may want to drink water or get anything to refresh them. Yes, that is also what happens with the laptop.
When you have used your laptop for a long time, it starts getting hot, and the cooling fan helps ease the hotness of the laptop.
If you are looking for a middle ground where everyone connects on a laptop, it is the motherboard. Now, we are talking about the parts of the laptop and not the human factors. And, it is why people decide to change their laptop once they hear that the motherboard has issues.
The motherboard is the house of most parts of the laptop. Therefore, if there is an issue with the motherboard, it usually gets complicated as many parts are involved.
Interestingly, the motherboard can also come with some empty parts if you want to add more components. No one should joke around with the motherboard of their laptop.
The acronym CPU stands for central processing unit, and its work is exactly as its name implies. Some people are aware that the CPU is usually called the brain of a computer. But if you are not aware, here is your chance to learn something new.
Once you give a command to your laptop, the processing of the instructions goes on in the CPU. Thus, we have seen another essential part of a laptop. It would not be out of place to say that the laptop depends on the CPU to satisfy the user. Also, your CPU should operate at a certain speed, as going overboard will bring issues.
With the rise of work from home jobs, there has also been an increase in video calls, especially for an official meeting. So, it would not make sense if a laptop does not come with a camera.
We are yet to see any laptop that does not come with a camera. However, the clearness of the camera depends on the specification and type of laptop. With the help of the camera, one can now engage in meetings via Google Meet, Zoom, and other platforms.
Besides official settings, you can also use the camera for personal calls or even to take pictures.
We have noticed that when people want to sell their laptops, they usually request that the hard drive be removed because it contains all their files.
The hard drive that comes with a laptop varies, but you can get some that go up to 1TB. So, you have the assurances that your files are well-protected, and you can always access them. If you want to get a new laptop, you can remove the hard drive from your old laptop. Then, place the hard drive in a hard drive reader and connect it to your new laptop, and access all your files.
The operating system is a word that we are sure you must have heard as long as you use a laptop. Now, you may be wondering what it does.
The operating system manages most of the factors on the laptop. Typically, it is software that engages in management and communication. For example, Windows is an example of an operating system. It is the commonest operating system globally.
So, the OS is in charge of the smooth running of many things and apps on the laptop, and you will need to update it regularly. When you fail to update your operating system, you will notice that your laptop will start lagging.
RAM stands for Random Access Memory, and it plays a great role in a laptop. When using a laptop, some people are in the habit of having many applications open simultaneously. Sometimes, you will notice that there is a restriction to the number of applications you can open.
It could be that some applications close as you keep opening more applications. What is happening, in this case, is the RAM doing its duties. If your RAM is small, it restricts the number of applications that you can open simultaneously. Therefore, the larger your RAM size, the more apps you can open.
When you look at the sides of your laptop, we are sure that you will see some openings. These openings are usually referred to as ports. The number of available ports on a laptop varies as it depends on the laptop type.
The sizes of the ports also differ as there are different types of ports. Some of the ports that can be available are:
- HDMI Port
- USB Port
- Headphone Jack Port
- VGA Port, etc
All these ports also have different functions, as you can already imagine. For example, the USB port helps you connect a phone to the laptop.
Recall that we earlier mentioned how some people restrict their laptop function to only typing. But, you can use a laptop for much more, especially for entertainment purposes.
Without a doubt, everyone will agree that you can use your laptop to watch movies and play songs. After all, most DJs use a laptop for their job.
So, a speaker comes to the picture in making these functions possible. If there is no speaker on the laptop, you cannot get sound from the song or movie.
Fortunately, all laptops come with a speaker, and it is usually not challenging for a technician to fix a faulty speaker.
A laptop cannot work without its battery, as that is what powers the laptop. Over time, we have seen that batteries are usually stronger when the laptop is new, and it gets weaker as it stays. Well, it is normal, and also happens with phones.
Although it depends on your battery strength, a battery should last nothing less than an hour when fully charged. A laptop always comes with a battery and a supporting charger. Also, laptop batteries are sold in the markets, so you can buy a battery if your laptop battery is bad. However, always ensure to let an expert make the purchase.
There would be no use of a laptop if you cannot see what you are doing. For example, you need to type a document or email. If you do not have a medium that displays what you are typing, you cannot tell if what you are doing is correct. Hence, why every laptop comes with a screen, and it serves as a visual aid.
Irrespective of whatever you are doing with the laptop, the screen is what displays it. So, the laptop becomes useless when the screen is bad. It is important to note that laptop screens are expensive, so you need to be careful with your screen.
GPU refers to the Graphics Processing Unit of the laptop. So, you can also call it the video card. This unit ensures that quality and excellent graphics come up if you are the laptop for design purposes.
Some laptops are specially designed for design, and they usually have a higher GPU than other laptops. However, as a designer, we understand that it can be frustrating when the GPU is not functioning properly.
We have seen that many people, especially those who do not have any design affiliation, do not know that such a place exists on the laptop.
It is this part of the laptop that allows for a network connection. For example, you need to surf the internet and get information for the document you are preparing. So, you will need to connect the laptop to an internet connection to get the network to browse. And, it is the Wi-Fi card that makes such a connection possible.
It is best to keep in mind that older generation laptops may not have a Wi-Fi card. But, life is made easier with laptops that have this unit, and it also shows digitalization as they are moving with the world’s pace.
Well, it would not be fair to talk about a laptop’s battery without mentioning the charger. After all, it is the charger that gives power to the battery.
Sadly, we sometimes see that people make different charger-type connections and use them for their laptops, which is wrong. Every laptop usually comes with its charger type, and that is what you should buy if the original charger spoils.
When you start using the wrong charger for your laptop, you are leaving it at the risk of developing issues that may affect different parts of the laptop. So, do not joke around with your charger.
